Yeye wants an end to road deaths

Maritzburg United striker Mondli Cele passed away over the weekend in a car accident, and Kaizer Chiefs star Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane has had enough of seeing football players lose their lives on South African roads.

Cele died on Sunday morning after playing in the 3-3 Premier Soccer League draw with Orlando Pirates the day before. SABC sports reporter Delisile Ngwenya also passed away in the accident.

Letsholonyane believes now is the time for the authorities to ensure all South Africans are safe on our roads.

“It is sad to lose one of us,” Yeye told Kaizer Chiefs’ website. “We are losing too many athletes in car accidents, which is a cause for concern. We must make safety on our roads a priority.”

Football stars Cecil Lolo and Richard Henyekane have also recently lost their lives in car accidents.

While Leysholonyane is angry with the manner of Cele’s death, the midfielder admitted that he is grateful for the time he shared with him.

“We got shocked and drew strength from the Almighty for granting us an opportunity to have shared the life and times with Cele, both on and off the field of play,” he added. “He was a fine gentleman of sports. On behalf of the Chiefs players, I wish to extend my deepest heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.”

ZAlebs implores all South Africans to please take care on our roads.
