It seems like just yesterday when we heard of the untimely passing of one of South Africa's most loved musicians - Lebo Mathosa
It's been 11 years since the passing of the kwaito singer Lebo Mathosa. It feels like yesterday when she was blessing us with her talent.Lebo Mathosa started her kwaito singing career as a member of the prominent kwaito/Hip Hop group Boom Shaka alongside Junior Sokhela, Theo Nhlengethwa and Thembi Seete in 1994. Lebo was only 17 when she joined the group at the time and ever since she stepped onto the scene her career was nothing short of a success.
Lebo who was discovered by Don Laka at a nightclub, went on to pursue a solo career in 1999 and released her first debut album Dream which went platinum. The girl who was known as the “Madonna of the Townships” had a successful solo career and performed all over the world. Lebo said one of her most significant acts was performing at President Nelson Mandelas 85th birthday party.
Lebo not only graced the world with her amazing voice but she had the dance moves and unique fashion sense to back it up too. With a very distinct way of performing Lebo definitely knew how to put on a good show. Lebo exuded confidence and was never shy to show off her amazing body.
In 2001, Mathosa was nominated as one of Africas sexiest women by FHM magazine and won the award for Best Dressed Woman in 2001. A very attractive woman with a strong pro-feminist attitude, Lebo was openly bisexual too and wasn’t afraid to embrace that as well.
Mathosa died in a car accident in 2006 at the age of 29. She may no longer be with us but her spirit lives on.
Rest In Peace Lebo Mathosa.
